Quad`s new S Series has hung in the air for quite a while. It was revealed publicly already at the annual HiFi show in Bristol in February, but the official lanch has been taking some time. Now it's here, and five different models where cheapest bookshelf speakers wil cost 600 UKP.
Two stand models, two floor speakers and a center speaker pose the range in this new series from Quad, a manufacturer of speakers perhaps best known for its legendary electrostates. S Series is a selection of Quad`s 79-year anniversary - we all know that when you have come in such a respectable age, you get this thing about round numbers ...
All models in the S series have a newly developed ribbon tweeter, which Quad claim is a modern construction. It is tuned to have a wide horizontal dispersion, while the vertical dispersion is limited to reduce the undesirable early reflections from ceiling and floor.
Bass and midrange is handled by cones of kevlar. Stand models are bass reflex construction, with bass port located on the back. Floor models however have passive membranes at the rear to extend bass response. Two slave basses on the smallest floor model, and three at the top model.
All models have sandwich structures with wood veneer in black or Sapele Mahogany. This autumn there will also be available finishes in black- and white piano lacquer.
Quad S-1
This is the smallest tripod speaker. It's a two-way construction, where the new constructed ribbon tweeter is complemented by a four-inch Kevlar midrange / bass. This gives a stated frequency response from 58Hz - 20 kHz, and sensitivity of 84dB.

Quad S-2
The bigger stand model in Qua`s S Series. Here the four inch from S-1 is replaced by a five inch unit. Declared frequency rang is extended to 48hz - 22kHz, while the sensitivity is increased to 87dB.

Quad S-4
S-4 is the smallest tower model, and is a 3-way construction with slave basses. The same ribbon tweeter as int the stand speakers are supplemented with a four inches unit for the midrange, and a five inch bass - both in woven kevlar.
Two back-mounted slave basses contributes to a specified frequency range of 44Hz - 23kHz, and a sensitivity of 88DB.

Quad S-5
S-5 is the biggest floor model, and has an additional woofer relative to the slightly smaller S-4. In addition, Quad used a larger elements - 6½-inches in the bass, while the five inch unit is functioning as midrange element. In the back of the speaker, we find three full 6½-inches as slave basses.
The frequency range of the S-5 is claimed to be 42Hz - 23kHz, and arelatively high sensitivity at 90dB.

Quad S-C
Quad has also included a center speaker in the series, which allows using S-Series also in a multi-channel setup. S-C has a conventional structure for center speakers, with centrally located tweeter flanked by a midrange / woofer on each side. In this case we speak respectively ribbon tweeter and 4-inch. Two bass reflex ports are located at the rear.
Frequency of SC is provided to 65Hz - 20kHz, and sensitivity is 86dB.
