Thorens 900 Series - New top models with historical roots

Written by

Thorens has launched a new top series turntables. 900serien consists of TD 903, TD 905 and TD 907, providing obvious connotations to 40 years old classics.

The Swiss company Thorens has existed since 1883, and is an institution in the vinyl-related part of HiFi industry. They produced their first pickup already in 1929, and in the 50s and 60s the production of turntables arised.

The models TD150 and its successor TD160 was launched in respectively 1968 and 1972 - models that still has a large crowd of followers. These are models which both in construction and design are very similar to Linn's legendary Sondek, which was released in 1972. Myself also mave a sample of the TD160 MK2, and colleague Arve has tested a newly restored and rehabilitated edition, conducted by the Swiss company Swissonor .

And it is precisely TD150 and TD160 Thorens highlights as role models for the new 900 series to be launched now. Many Audiophile prefere gear with resilient subchassis, unlike the flat, unsprung structures which dominate a large part of the market today - also Thorens`s other models. But Thorens emphasize that they have put considerable effort into modernizing the structure compared to these classics.

This improved construction with sprung subchassis used in all of the three models in the new 900 series to be launched now. Thorens claim that the demand for models with sprung subchassis has been tremendous, and the company has placed emphasis on using sufficient time to develop the new range to enable them to become worthy reference models.

The suspension on the new models can be adjusted from outside - even while discs are playing. In contrast to TD160, where you must take a trip inside the player to adjust. Plates in all layers of the structure is made of composite with alternating layers of aluminum and polyethylene.
