Three new AV receivers from Arcam

Written by

Arcam launch three new AV receivers. And it is the smallest of those beeing the most exciting kid.

A month ago we reported about a sneak peek at Arcam`s new top model of AV receeivere, AVR850. It is Arcam's first receiver that supports Dolby Atmos, and is in addition marketed as the successor to the best stereoamplifier from Arcam ever.

Arcam has always been a producer who has emphasized good solutions for those who are both interested in good music reproduction in stereo, but also want a solution for home theater / multi channel. It started already in the previous century, when the Alpha series was amongst the very first to implement HT bypass on their amplifiers 8R, 9 and 10. The latter had also eventually an option for extension DAVE, which was a surround module for this stereo amp. Expansion Module for multichannel they also offered in later products, as a multi-channel module for some of their preamplifiers FMJ series. And HT-bypass has also followed the vast majority of stereo amplifiers after the Alpha series.

This time Arcam again found their creative side without fear of new paths. Actually, this is a Columbi egg as it is on the border to mysterious that no other manufacturer has done this before them. That is - really has Linn done something similar in their DSM-streamers.

And what we are talking about is of course introducing a stereo receiver with full HDMI for both audio and video. It has become lots of people who want and need the ability to manage HDMI signals related to their stereo system, but still don`t want to buy a surround receiver. Therefore, it is a highly intelligent solution to offer HDMI on an stereo amplifier.

Arcam SR250

And that's when the youngest of the three newcomers  arrive - Arcam SR250 has this feature. This is a stereo receiver with two channels - receiver because it also has a built in tuner for FM and DAB / DAB +. In addition to the 7 HDMI inputs it of course also has SPDIF (4x) and Toslink (2x) and USB input. In addition there are 6 analog RCA connectors, and a network interface.

The power of Arcam SR250 is rated at 2x90 watts into 8 ohms in 20-20.000Hz. Should you desire even more power, there is pre-out for two channels + subwoofer.

Arcam AVR550

This is the medium of the new AV receivers, and it is tempting to regard it as a scaled-down version of the new flagship model. In addition, the top model also has Dolby Atmos, and processor that supports a fully 7.1.4 setup. Those who want to take it out completely depends on supplementing the 7 power amplifiers in AVR550 with 4 external power channels via pre-out.

Arcam mentions no possibility of future DTS: X, or support for Auro-3D. The rated power is somewhat greater than the SR250, also in stereo. The header contains an output of 2x110W in stereo at full bandwidth, while the power with 7 channels in operation is rated to 7x90W at 1kHz.

Arcam AVR850

This is the new flagship in Arcam`s range of AV receivers. Like for AVR550 also AVR850 has Dirac Live® room correction, provided by Dirac Research. The amplifiers operate in class G, an amplifier concept that has also  been used in its latest stereo amplifiers.

The power on the AVR850 is rated at 120W into 8 ohms in stereo, and 200W into 4 ohms. Both in 20-20.000Hz. With operations in all seven channels, the rated power is 100W / 180W in respectively 8 and 4 ohms. But when at 1kHz.
