RECORD NEWS: Holberg Variations - 1B1, Christian Ihle Hadland, Erlend Skomsvoll.
Written by Karl Erik SyltheSimax release CD with 3 different variants of Grieg's Holberg Suite. Or Holberg Suite X3, as expressed by Asbjorn Schaatun.
Edvard Grieg's Holberg Suite is one of the most played compositions by Edvard Grieg, and the number of recordings is quite formidable. Only a year ago Simax released their latest recording, with Norwegian Chamber Orchestra on the album Nordic Spring.
On this release Holberg Variations there are three very different versions of the Holberg Suite. Or rather - there are two versions of the Holberg Suite, and recomposition / Improvisation by Erlend Skomsvoll.

We start with 1B1, an orchestra was founded in 2008. Artistic director is Jan Bjøranger, and he leads a collection younger musicians with a philosophy where creativity precedence flawless performance. 1B1 has also been cooperating with a number of prominent contemporary composers, although here they relate to well known paths from Grieg.
A taste of 1B1 who performs 1st movement of Holberg Suite:
Holberg Suite was originally written for piano - orchestration came a year later. The great pianist Christian Ihle Hadland plays the original version on solo piano. We published a review of Christian Ihle Hadland`s interpretation of Mozart: Piano Concertos Nos. 21 & 22 here .
Erlend Skomsvoll is one of the most exciting musicians. He travels in the areas of jazz, classical and contemporary music, and is probably best known as the lead musician of Come Shine, and for his cooperation with Trondheim Jazz Orchestra, topped by Molde concert with Chick Corea. Skomsvoll tend to pick the notes apart and put them together again in a way that lets you experience a new musical universe. The teaser we get at the video below gives tense expectations of what happens to the Holberg Suite in his recomposition and improvisation with 1B1.
In adition to CD, Holberg Variations will also be available on 180g vinyl.
