Sonos Arc - new soundbar with Dolby Atmos Featured

Written by

Sonos launches a new top model soundbar. The name is Sonos Arc and it has 3D sound.

Sonos has let it shine through that som great news would arrive in early May. And at 6. of May the news broke. In addition to the biggest news in the form of the Sonos Arc soundbar, there is also a new 3rd generation Sonos Sub, and speaker Sonos Five.

Sonos Arc

Sonos Arc is obviously the most important news of the three products launched yesterday. Sonos has long been king of the hill when it comes to streaming speakers, and this also applies to sound bars, although in that sector there has been greater competition than on pure WiFi speakers.

And eventually, the top model Sonos Playbar along with the Playbase that we tested three years ago have slowed down in some areas. They lacked HDMI input, and depended on optical connection with the limitations this entails. In addition, the competitors top models have gradually been integrated into Dolby Atmos.

The new top model Dolby Arc will be at the height of both these exercises, and has a 5.0.2 system integrated into the unit. Arc has 11 drivers inside, two of which face up for 3D sound with Dolby Atmos. Thus, the soundboard is ready to reproduce everything being served in a custom format, be it stereo, Dolby Audio 5.1 or Dolby Atmos.

It is possible to fine-tune the sound of the Arc in the Sonos app with voice enhancement features, nightly sounds that muffle loud explosions, and an update of Sonos` adjustment technology, Trueplay, which is Sonos' variant of room correction.

Sonos says that Arc is built on Sonos' next-generation software platform, S2, and that you can control the device with the new Sonos app, a TV remote or Apple AirPlay 2 - as well as with voice using Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. Connection via HDMI with eARC and ARC provides a simple setup.

Sonos Arc is in itself a 5.0.2 setup, and this can be expanded with the Sonos Sub and a pair of Sonos One SL surround speakers.

Arc replaces Playbar and Playbase in the selection of Sonos products and is available from June 10 at a price of NOK 8 999 on Sonos.com and through resellers Sonos cooperates with.

New Sonos Sub and Sonos Five

Two other updated products were also launched at the same time as Sonos Arc. Both Sonos Sub and Sonos Five have increased processor power over their predecessors, but otherwise have the same sound characteristics as the models they replace.

Second generation Sonos Play: 5 we tested just over four years ago, and it made a good figure as well as a stereo setup to replace a conventional two-channel system. The new SOnos Five is available in black with black grille, and as a novelty, the white variant now has white grille.

The price of the Sonos Five is set at 5.799, - while the Sonos Sub has ended at 7.999, -.

Sonos S2

Sonos writes in its press release about the new Sonos app:

Starting June 8, Sonos customers will be able to download the new Sonos app, which provides an upgraded software platform that will power the next generation of Sonos products and experiences, including Arc, Five and the third generation of Sub. The three new products will only be powered by the new app.

This next generation of app features includes support for better resolution audio technology, as we see it with Dolby Atmos on Arc, as well as increased security and better design for easier use. UI updates make it even easier for customers to search for content, control sound, and customize the experience with new features, such as saved room groups.

Customers can download the new app and easily transfer their system to the new platform. All favorites, services and settings are taken care of.
