BBC Radio 3 debates pure audio productions on Blu-ray
Written by Karl Erik SyltheMorten Lindberg 2L have on facebook pointed out that the British radio station BBC Radio 3 this morning had a longer touches on Blu-ray as pure audio productions. Many interesting perspectives, and we comment on some of them here.
BBC Radio 3 had brought in Christopher Dingle from Birmingham Conservatoire, an obviously well-orient capacity in both classical music and releases in high-res multi-channel.
Yet first a small initial slight frustration. In the absence of a well-established collective name for the three subformats in pure audio on Blu-ray, in the program it is used Blu-ray Audio as a common term. This is understandable, since it is the most intuitive concept, especially as the heir of DVD-Audio. Yet it is confusing, since the term is also a branding concept for releases of the classical music giants Naxos and Deutsche Grammophon, and eventually TACET. This illustrates that it is high time that it is established and incorporated a common term that also includes Pure Audio Blu-ray (2L. and more) and High Fidelity Pure Audio (Universal Music Group). It's not easy to keep track of these concepts, and it becomes no less confusing by the HFPA lately alternatively referred to as Blu-ray Pure Audio, in other words the true original in kind of reverse.
Christopher Dingle was not for a moment in doubt that it was 2L (Morten Lindberg) that was the first pioneer with Pure Audio Blu-ray. He also drew 2L`s recordings as the ones he would choose to convince others about the benefits of music in surround sound. Christopher Dingle believes otherwise that the improvement from stereo to surround is larger than corresponding to the transition from mono to stereo.
UMG's releases have received some pepper in the past, and Christopher Dingle carries more chili to the fire. He stands very surprised that several of UMG's HFPA-releases that are relaunches on prior multi-channel SACDs, has now dropped the ready-mixed multi channel slot as there is plenty of space on the disc. Otherwise, high-res mentor John Sunier in Audiophile Audition has also made some significant negative comments to some choice UMG has taken on their blu-ray releases.
The program also commented that some recordings demand a video-device for navigation, but without mentioning that these "some" are depending on sub-format, or label. One of the benefits of the Pure Audio Blu-ray is that they have been contious on this issue, and avoid the need for video.
Radio program can be heard here, but are available only for a limited time. The relevant part starts about. 1 hour and 30 minutes into the program, and lasts approx. an hour.
