RECORD NEWS - 2L in new directions.

Written by

2L release Gloria, composed by Frey Aagre, performed with the choir Schola Cantorum. The medium that is released marks a new trend.

We have seen the tendency of this phenomenon also from other labels. Some releases are only as download.

The reasons for choosing such a solution to some releases are obvious. In a world where an increasing part of customers choose streaming playback in some variation, this makes reduced costs. In addition, it provides greater flexibility in relation to the size of the content in a release. Another company in the Pure Audio Blu-ray camp - Sono Luminus - has just launched two new releases as "digital only", ie without there being physical discs simultaneously.

This time it is thus 2L claiming their first clean download release, and there is more to come. According to 2L`s release plan there should be more releases in the same category, both from the Scola Cantorum and other musicians. But for us who value physical discs, it is reassuring that there are plenty of both PABDs and SACDs on the same release schedule.

Morten Lindberg in 2L informs Audiophile.no that the concept of pure digital releases is primarily a development where 2L will produce and publish stand-alone works. GLORIA is only 10 minutes of music. At a later date 2L will collect these singles in a physical album on Pure Audio Blu-ray.

The music on Gloria is composed by saxophonist Frey Aagre, and she performs it with the choir Scola Cantorum - a choir with many recordings at 2L earlier, including " Ja, vi elsker", which we reviewed here . Gloria is conducted by Tone Bianca Dahl Sparre. Gloria was premiered in December 2013 and recording with 2L was conducted in March 2014 in Uranienborg Church.

As download Gloria is available in stereo and 5.1. Stereo is offered in various resolutions from 320kbps MP3 to 24bit/192kHz flac, or 352.8 kHz / 24 bit DXD in flac. It is also available as DSD64 or DSD128, in stereo. In multi-channel, one can choose between 24bit / 96kHz in Flac and DSD64.

The usual graphical representation of microphone / musician posision shows that stereo microphones have a conventional location at a safe distance from the offside line, while multi-channel line up has a for 2L equally traditional central position in front of the conductor, with the choir and saxophone placed around in a horseshoe formation.
