Devialet PHANTOM - a real gamechanger?

Written by

French Devialet has launched a new product that they claim will change the music industry. It concerns Devialet PHANTOM - Implosive Sound Center.

It may be tempting to take all the allegations Devialet put forward in the presentation of PHANTOM with a large pinch of salt. On the other hand, this French producer set up a proper amount of respect in the HiFi world, with their special HighEnd amplifiers that looks like a million, and that sounds insolent good. They have made furore in international HiFi press, and played great on a couple Avalon Compas when we visited Renaisance Audio last fall .

What lies at the bottom of Devialet amplifiers is a technology they call ADH, a combination of Class A and Class D. This technology is also included into the new products being launched now, Devialet PHANTOM and Devialet SILVER PHANTOM. This is in reality compact active wireless speakers, but Devialet has far more exotic denominations on the sly.

And Devaliet has a fairly good reason too, as there is nothing to do with performance specifications that gives associations to Sonos Play: 1, which the undersigned has otherwise in for a revisited test time. A frequency responce in the bass range down to 16Hz + -2dB, SPL at 99 / 105dB respectively for PHANTOM and SILVER PHANTOM, or effect on 750W / 3000W. This is definitely not your average wireless speaker.

DIALOGUEPHANTOM get help from SAM (Speaker Active Matching) - a processor technology to achieve what they call Heart Bass Implosion (HBI). There are two dedicated woofers in a PHANTOM and Devialet indicates synergy of these and SAM to provide the possibility for the extreme sound, which they also claim has 0 distortion and 0 background noise.

The difference between PHANTOM and SILVER PHANTOM is the effect of respectively 750 and 3000 watts, giving a difference of how high they can play. Devialet argue otherwise the sound is identical on the two. It is  possible to play on many different samples of PHANTOM. Devaliet has a separate unit they call DIALOG, which keeps track of the various units in a multiroom setup. This is regulated further by the user via an app that they call SPARK. It is otherwise possible to get a specially designed stand to Phantom. Also this has got a name - BRANCH.

WE can not avoid getting some Rolls-Royce associations to these names and PHANTOM SILVER PHANTOM, and look forward to the next opportunity for listening.
