Written by

Dolby follows the success they have had with the 3D format Dolby Atmos by making a separate version for headphones. In the first round being launched for mobile devices.

It sounds initially quite unbelievable, but Dolby launch Atmos for headphones - this audio format that would otherwise require ceiling-mounted speakers or special Atmos Enabled speakers reflecting sound from the ceiling.

According Dolby, Atmos for Headphones is based on a variant of HRTF (Head Related Transfer Functions) which gives the illusion that parts of the sound coming from above.

It is launched for mobile devices first, and the first device that is ready is Amazon's 8.9-inch tablet Fire HDX8.9. We expect that iOS and Android is soon to follow.
